Chapter Nineteen
Dan had never washed up so quickly in his life, pulling the dishes through the water at the speed of light. He wasn’t sure how any of that had happened. Okay, so he knew exactly how that had happened and he knew he also had to stop it. The relief at having spoken to someone about his parents, and to have that person look at him and not judge him was massive. As he had sat there looking at her he was so full of love for this amazing woman who had listened to him, although her innate good nature had meant that she didn’t really understand what he was saying. Hadn’t seen the darkness he was trying to allude to.
But he couldn’t blame her for that. He didn’t understand what he was saying. He knew that he was warning her that he was damaged goods, not good enough for her. He knew that he was saying that he was scared, that he didn’t want to get more emotionally invested than he already was, that he wasn’t the man you chose to settle down and have a family with. And right now, he knew that she was scurrying down the road as quickly as she could to escape him.
As she had sat listening to him and responded as she had – you define you, no one and nothing else. And I like you – he had become tired of fighting his attraction to her, tired of keeping walls up and tired of always doing the right thing. So, he had leant in to kiss her and that act, that act had lit a fire within him, an acknowledgement that he wanted Alice, he wanted to be in her life, he wanted to support her in her choices and he wanted to be in her bed.
Wanting to love Alice didn’t diminish his love for Sophie, and wanting to be with Alice didn’t stop him having fear for his future and who he could become, but it did feel right. It felt more than right, it felt necessary, and so, so good. As if he were coming home. He belonged.
But his good sense had kicked in.
And Alice had walked out.
He pulled his arms into his coat and shut the back door behind him. Urgency and speed still his priority. He couldn’t let, didn’t want, Alice to be walking home by herself right now. Not because she was unsafe, Penmenna was as safe as villages came, but because he didn’t want them to leave like this. Her forced gaiety hadn’t deceived him for a minute and he was determined that she saw it was he who was at fault, not Alice.
Unfortunately, though, Ethel’s back door didn’t seem to understand his urgency, the key refusing to turn with ease, and as he took it out to try again, he dropped it on the floor and was left scrabbling around on the ground in an ironic repeat of earlier, before he had put a nuclear bomb under his friendship with Alice.
